    Kerman Unified School District is committed to making schools safe for all students and staff.  We work closely with local and state agencies, including police, fire, emergency medical services and public health officials, to ensure we are well-prepared and students and staff are protected in the event of an emergency.

    Should an emergency occur, school officials and emergency responders will first do what is needed to secure a facility for the safety of students and staff, and then work to inform parents with accurate and complete information.

    LAW ENFORCEMENT PARTNERSHIPS
    Kerman Unified School District sites have a School Site Safety Plan that is updated annually and practiced regularly to ensure students and staff know their roles in the event of an emergency.   Kerman Unified School District employs two (2) full-time School Resource Officers with extensive law enforcement experience and training.   Kerman Unified School District has close partnerships with local and state agencies, including police departments, sherriff's office, fire, emergency medical services and public health officials.

    VISITOR CHECK-IN PROCEDURES
    School Site Safety Plans and safety procedures are practiced regularly by students and staff.  Staff also participate in staff development opportunities in the area of safety, including periodic training with law enforcement.    Kerman Unified School District campus designs promote safety for students and staff as each campus is secured with fencing, cameras, and a central entrance onto campus.   Kerman Unified School District uses the Raptor Visitor Management System, which requires you to present a valid driver's license which is scanned into the system.  Once approved, the system will issue a badge identifying the visitor, date, and purpose of visit.

    COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
    Buses are equipped with cameras to assist law enforcement in the event of an emergency.  Kerman Unified School District is looking at technology software that would allow students to swipe a Transportation ID Card when they get on and get off the bus.      Kerman Unified School District would like to encourage parents, students, staff and community members to report anything of concern during or after school hours dealing with safety issues.   Kerman Unified School District uses web and app-based systems that increase the speed of reporting and responding to campus safety issues.  CatapultEMS is an emergency communication system used at every Site.

     

    WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW

    Safety is our number one priority.  Should an emergency occur, school officials and emergency responders will first do what is needed to secure a facility or campus for the safety of students and staff, and then work to inform parents with accurate and complete information.  If a parent hears of an emergency from their student prior to hearing about it from Kerman Unified School District, please know it is because the school staff acts first to ensure the safety of students and staff, and next communicate the situation to parents.

    If the situation is serious enough to require parents to leave their home or workplace, we will either ask parents to pick their child up or will direct them to a location at which they will be updated on any developments.  For the safety of parents and the safety of students and staff, it is best to wait for additional instructions and only head to school when instructed to do so, as staff may be redirected away from working to keep your student safe to address numbers of parents trying to pick up their child.

     

      TERMS TO KNOW
    • Lockdown = A lockdown is called when an immediate, serious threat is present against students or staff of a school.  During a lockdown, no one is allowed to leave the facility.  Students will be gathered from outdoors and moved indoors.  Doors will be locked and students will not be allowed to leave with a parent or guardian.  The main office doors will be locked and, when possible, signs will be posted in the windows.  Kerman Unified's emergency phone notification system will be used to alert parents of the school's lockdown status.
    • Shelter In Place = A shelter in place is called when school officials are made aware of a potentially hazardous situation that may reach a district facility.  If a shelter in place is called, a school site is on heightened alert. Doors will not be locked and students will be allowed to leave with a parent or guardian. Students will be released only to an adult with proper identification who is on file with the school as an emergency contact.
    • Evacuation = A campus evacuation may be called when the District Administration determines that student safety may be jeopardized by staying indoors.  If necessary, plans are in place to provide transportation for students to alternate locations.  Kerman Unified's emergency phone notification system will be used to alert parents of the evacuation.  Students will be released only to an adult with proper identification who is on file with the school as an emergency contact.
