Air Quality & Heat Advisory

An air quality and heat advisory is issued when environmental conditions pose potential health risks due to high levels of air pollution and extreme temperatures for students or staff. During such advisories, the air quality index (AQI) typically reaches unhealthy levels, often due to elevated concentrations of pollutants like ozone, particulate matter, or smoke from wildfires. This can cause breathing difficulties, especially for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Alongside poor air quality, a heat advisory warns of dangerously high temperatures that can lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke, especially during prolonged exposure to the sun. Schools often take precautionary measures during these advisories, such as modifying outdoor activities, keeping students indoors, and ensuring staff has access to cool, shaded areas and plenty of water. In extreme cases, outdoor events or sports may be postponed to protect the health and safety of everyone involved.
